Shield AI Secures $2B from Advent to Scale Hivemind Platform

Shield AI closes landmark $2B funding round

Shield AI, a leading U.S. defense technology company focused on autonomous systems, has raised $2 billion in fresh capital from global private equity firm Advent International. The deal values Shield AI at approximately $12.7 billion, underscoring surging investor confidence in next‑generation autonomous defense technology.

The new funding will be used to scale the company’s flagship product, Hivemind, an advanced AI pilot designed to enable aircraft and other platforms to operate autonomously in high-threat environments.

Scaling the Hivemind autonomous AI pilot

Hivemind is a software stack that functions as a digital pilot, allowing military aircraft and uncrewed systems to fly, navigate, and complete complex missions without human control. By combining AI algorithms, sensor fusion, and real-time decision-making, the system is built to operate in contested airspace where GPS and communications may be denied.

With the backing of Advent International, Shield AI plans to accelerate deployment of Hivemind across a wider range of platforms, including drones, fighter aircraft, and other autonomous vehicles. The company aims to support U.S. and allied forces as they modernize their capabilities amid rising global security tensions.

Acquisition of Aechelon Technology to boost simulation

As part of its growth strategy, Shield AI will acquire Aechelon Technology, a specialist in high‑fidelity simulation and visualization systems for defense training and mission rehearsal. Aechelon’s software is widely used in pilot training and virtual mission planning, providing realistic digital environments for complex scenarios.

The acquisition is expected to deepen Shield AI’s capabilities in synthetic training and large‑scale virtual testing of autonomous systems. By integrating Aechelon’s simulation technology with Hivemind, the company can iterate and validate its AI pilot in rich virtual battlefields before live deployment, reducing cost and risk for military customers.

Strategic implications for defense and AI

The investment by Advent International signals strong institutional belief in the future of AI-enabled defense platforms. As governments seek to maintain a technological edge, demand is growing for autonomy, human-machine teaming, and resilient AI software that can adapt in real time.

With a multi-billion-dollar war chest, Shield AI is positioned to be a central player in the shift toward software-defined, autonomous military systems, where AI pilots and advanced simulation environments are becoming core strategic assets.
