Engineers inspecting SF₆-free medium-voltage switchgear in a modern electrical substation

Nuventura acquired by Lucy Group to scale SF₆‑free grid tech

Lucy Group buys Berlin climate-tech startup Nuventura

UK-based industrial group Lucy Group has acquired Berlin-headquartered grid technology startup Nuventura in a strategic move to accelerate the global rollout of SF₆‑free switchgear. The deal underscores growing pressure on utilities to replace equipment using sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆), one of the most potent greenhouse gases used in the power sector.

Targeting SF₆, a major climate liability in power grids

Nuventura develops medium-voltage gas‑insulated switchgear (GIS) that replaces SF₆ with clean, dry air while maintaining the compact footprint and reliability utilities expect. SF₆, widely used for electrical insulation, has a global warming potential more than 20,000 times higher than CO₂ and is under tightening regulatory scrutiny in Europe and beyond.

By joining forces with Lucy Group, which has a long-standing presence in electrical distribution and grid automation, Nuventura gains access to global manufacturing capacity, established utility relationships and a broader sales network. The combination is expected to speed up certification, deployment and large-scale adoption of SF₆‑free grid equipment.

Scaling SF₆‑free switchgear worldwide

Industrial muscle meets startup innovation

The acquisition aligns with Lucy Group’s strategy to focus on decarbonisation technologies and modernisation of power infrastructure. Nuventura’s modular designs and licensing model allow local partners to produce air‑insulated GIS, reducing both costs and supply‑chain risk for utilities.

Industry analysts see the deal as a signal that climate‑tech hardware is maturing, moving from pilot projects to mass deployment. As grids adapt to rising shares of renewable energy and growing electrification of transport and heating, demand for compact, low‑emission switchgear solutions is expected to surge.

Regulation and ESG driving adoption

Stricter EU regulations on fluorinated gases and investor focus on ESG performance are pushing utilities and industrial customers to phase out SF₆‑based equipment. With Nuventura now backed by Lucy Group’s balance sheet and industrial know‑how, the partnership aims to position SF₆‑free technology as the default choice for new medium‑voltage installations worldwide.
