Metafuels sustainable aviation fuel facility concept at the Port of Rotterdam

Metafuels wins €1.92M Dutch grant for Rotterdam e‑SAF push

Metafuels secures Dutch backing for sustainable aviation fuel

Swiss AviationTech startup Metafuels has secured a €1.92 million grant from the Dutch government to accelerate its e‑SAF (electric sustainable aviation fuel) project in Rotterdam. The funding underscores the Netherlands’ ambition to position Rotterdam as a leading hub for next‑generation green aviation fuels.

Advancing e‑SAF production in Rotterdam

The grant will support the development of Metafuels’ pilot‑scale facilities and engineering work in the Rotterdam industrial cluster, where access to renewable power, existing fuel infrastructure and major airports creates ideal conditions for scaling sustainable aviation fuel production.

Unlike conventional biofuels, e‑SAF is produced using renewable electricity, captured CO₂ and green hydrogen. This pathway is designed to deliver deep decarbonisation of aviation while remaining compatible with today’s aircraft and airport fuel systems.

Strategic step for European aviation decarbonisation

The Dutch grant aligns with emerging EU SAF mandates, which will require airlines to blend increasing volumes of low‑carbon jet fuel over the coming decades. By supporting Metafuels, the Netherlands aims to secure early access to scalable e‑SAF capacity and strengthen its position in the rapidly growing clean aviation value chain.

Industry observers note that Rotterdam’s deep‑sea port, petrochemical infrastructure and proximity to major European hubs make it a natural location for early commercial e‑SAF plants. The project is expected to generate high‑skilled jobs in electrofuels, power‑to‑liquid technologies and related cleantech services.

Implications for airlines and climate targets

As airlines face mounting pressure to cut carbon emissions, partnerships with innovators like Metafuels are becoming central to their long‑term strategies. The Rotterdam e‑SAF initiative could provide a blueprint for how public funding, industrial infrastructure and startup innovation can converge to deliver commercially viable net‑zero aviation solutions.

With this new Dutch grant, Metafuels is positioned to move from concept to concrete deployment, helping Europe close the gap between climate ambition and the availability of truly sustainable jet fuel.
