Strengthening Europe’s Technological Sovereignty
At the recent annual summit hosted by climate tech venture capital firm World Fund in Berlin, elite European founders and investors assembled to address the continent’s future. The core focus of the discussions centered on transitioning from scientific breakthroughs to achieving true technological sovereignty across Europe, including the United Kingdom.
Industry leaders argued that while Europe excels at early-stage research, it historically struggles to scale these innovations. To counter this, Dailyza reports that prominent figures are calling for a massive influx of late-stage growth capital. Danijel Višević, co-founder of World Fund, emphasized that retaining intellectual property within European borders is vital for economic resilience.
Overcoming the Scaling Bottleneck
The summit highlighted key sectors such as quantum computing, decarbonisation technology, and artificial intelligence. Startups in these spaces require patient capital to build physical infrastructure. Founders noted that relying on foreign capital often forces European companies to relocate their headquarters to the United States.
To prevent this brain drain, speakers urged institutional investors, including pension funds, to allocate at least 1% of their portfolios to deep-tech and venture capital. By bridging this funding gap, European nations can secure critical supply chains and maintain global competitiveness in the transition to a net-zero economy.
