PENEMUE raises fresh funding to fight digital abuse with AI
Freiburg-based startup PENEMUE has secured new funding to advance its mission of detecting and combating online hate speech, digital violence and disinformation. The capital injection will help the company scale its proprietary AI algorithms and expand partnerships with platforms, civil society organizations and public institutions.
AI-driven approach to harmful content
PENEMUE develops multilingual machine learning models capable of identifying abusive content, coordinated harassment and manipulative narratives in real time. Unlike traditional keyword-based filters, its systems analyze context, semantics and conversation dynamics to distinguish between legitimate debate, satire and targeted abuse.
The startup’s technology can be integrated via APIs into social networks, comment sections, gaming platforms and messaging tools, enabling automated flagging, prioritization for human review and detailed risk analytics dashboards. This helps content moderators and trust & safety teams respond faster to emerging threats and reduce exposure to harmful material.
Tackling disinformation and digital violence
Beyond hate speech, PENEMUE focuses on detecting disinformation campaigns, including coordinated bot activity, manipulated narratives and cross-platform amplification. Its tools map how misleading content spreads, identify high-impact accounts and provide early warnings to media organizations and public bodies.
The startup also works on recognizing patterns of digital violence, such as stalking, doxxing and gender-based harassment. By combining linguistic signals with network analysis, its systems aim to protect vulnerable communities, journalists and public figures from sustained online attacks.
Scaling impact across Europe and beyond
The new funding will be used to hire additional data scientists, NLP engineers and trust & safety specialists, and to enhance the accuracy of models in under-resourced languages. PENEMUE plans to deepen collaborations with European regulators, research institutions and NGOs working on platform governance and digital rights.
As governments and platforms face mounting pressure to curb harmful content while safeguarding freedom of expression, demand for robust, transparent and auditable AI safety tools is growing. With its latest funding round, PENEMUE positions itself as a key European player in building safer, more resilient online spaces.
