OpenAI targets $100B valuation as Amazon and Nvidia circle

OpenAI said to be nearing $100 billion funding round

OpenAI, the company behind breakout generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, is reportedly in advanced discussions for a new funding round that could value the firm close to $100 billion. According to people familiar with the talks, tech giants including Amazon and Nvidia are emerging as leading participants, underscoring the intense race to secure a strategic foothold in next‑generation artificial intelligence.

Strategic investors look to deepen AI ties

Industry sources suggest that Amazon and Nvidia see a major stake in OpenAI as both a financial bet and a way to expand their influence across the rapidly growing AI infrastructure and cloud computing markets. Nvidia, whose GPU chips power many large‑scale AI models, has been a primary beneficiary of the generative AI boom. A deeper partnership with OpenAI would help cement its position at the core of global AI workloads.

Amazon, through its AWS cloud platform, is racing to keep pace with Microsoft, which has already committed tens of billions of dollars to OpenAI. A sizeable investment would allow Amazon Web Services to offer tighter integration with OpenAI APIs, appealing to enterprise customers building applications on top of large language models.

Implications for the AI ecosystem

Valuation signals sustained investor confidence

A potential $100 billion valuation would place OpenAI among the world’s most valuable private technology companies. The size of the round, reportedly under discussion with multiple institutional and strategic investors, highlights ongoing confidence in the long‑term revenue potential of AI platforms, despite concerns over regulation, data usage and computing costs.

Regulatory and competitive pressures mount

The prospect of OpenAI deepening ties with several of the world’s largest tech companies is likely to attract scrutiny from regulators focused on competition policy and data privacy. As powerful AI models become embedded in search, cloud services and productivity software, policymakers are increasingly concerned about market concentration and the societal impact of automated decision‑making.

For now, the reported negotiations underline that the battle to dominate generative AI is far from settled. With Amazon, Nvidia and other potential backers circling, OpenAI appears poised to secure the capital needed to scale its computing infrastructure, accelerate research and push its technology deeper into mainstream business and consumer products.
