Former SpaceX engineers working on optical networking hardware for AI data center clusters

Mesh Optical: Ex‑SpaceX Team Raises $50M to Turbocharge AI

Ex‑SpaceX talent targets AI bottlenecks with Mesh Optical

A team of former SpaceX engineers has raised around $50 million for a new startup, Mesh Optical, aiming to solve one of the most pressing problems in modern computing: how to connect massive AI clusters fast enough to keep up with exploding demand.

The company is developing high‑performance optical interconnect technology designed for data‑center‑scale AI training and inference workloads. As enterprises race to deploy large generative AI models, the networking fabric that links thousands of GPUs has become a critical performance and cost bottleneck.

Optical networking built for hyperscale AI

Mesh Optical is building a system that replaces or augments traditional electrical networking with advanced optical links, promising dramatically higher bandwidth and lower latency between compute nodes. By moving more traffic onto light‑based connections, the startup aims to improve cluster utilization and reduce the time and energy required to train large models.

The founding team’s background at SpaceX — where engineers had to design robust, high‑throughput communications for the Starlink satellite network — gives them deep experience in large‑scale, mission‑critical networking and custom hardware design. Investors are betting that this expertise can be redirected to the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market.

Rising demand from cloud and AI providers

The fresh capital will help Mesh Optical move from prototype to production‑ready hardware and software, targeting leading cloud providers, AI labs, and enterprises building their own GPU clusters. With the cost of top‑tier AI chips soaring, customers are increasingly focused on squeezing every possible percentage point of efficiency from their infrastructure.

By offering a high‑bandwidth, low‑latency fabric that can scale across racks and data centers, Mesh Optical positions itself as a key enabler of the next wave of AI supercomputers. If successful, its technology could become a foundational layer for the world’s most advanced machine learning systems.
