BKR Capital raises $20M for Black Innovation Fund II
Toronto-based venture firm BKR Capital, formerly known as Black Innovation Capital, has secured a $20 million first close for its second fund, the Black Innovation Fund II. The new vehicle is designed to back early-stage, Black-led technology startups and strengthen the presence of underrepresented founders in the North American innovation ecosystem.
Backing Black-led tech innovation
BKR Capital focuses on pre-seed and seed-stage companies building scalable solutions in sectors such as fintech, enterprise software, healthtech, and digital platforms. By targeting founders who have historically faced barriers to institutional capital, the firm aims to close persistent gaps in venture funding and accelerate wealth creation in Black communities.
The new fund builds on the firm’s first vehicle, which was launched under the Black Innovation Capital name. With Black Innovation Fund II, BKR Capital plans to expand its portfolio, increase follow-on support, and deepen its role as a strategic partner to founders through mentorship, market access, and operational guidance.
Growing institutional interest in inclusive venture capital
The $20 million first close signals rising institutional interest in inclusive investing and diversity-focused venture capital. Limited partners in such funds are increasingly seeking both competitive financial returns and measurable impact in terms of job creation, representation, and ecosystem development.
By channeling capital into Black-led startups, BKR Capital aims to capture overlooked opportunities in innovation and technology, while challenging structural biases in the broader VC industry. The firm’s latest close positions it to play a larger role in shaping a more equitable startup landscape in Canada and across North America.
