Apple unveils MacBook Neo as its most affordable modern Mac

Apple has introduced the new MacBook Neo, a $599‑class entry‑level laptop aimed at students, educators and first‑time Mac buyers. Positioned as an accessible gateway into the Mac ecosystem, the device is powered by the new A18 Pro chip and brings advanced on‑device AI capabilities to Apple’s most budget‑friendly notebook yet.

Design, display and battery life

The MacBook Neo features a 13‑inch Liquid Retina display, offering high brightness, wide color support and sharp text rendering in a compact form factor. The design follows Apple’s modern minimalist aesthetic, targeting users who want a lightweight laptop for everyday productivity, streaming and study.

Battery performance is a key selling point. Apple claims up to 16‑hour battery life, depending on workload, giving students and mobile professionals a full day of use without needing to recharge. This endurance is enabled by the power efficiency of the A18 Pro architecture and tight integration between hardware and macOS.

A18 Pro chip and on-device AI features

At the heart of the MacBook Neo is the A18 Pro, a custom Apple silicon chip that blends high performance with low power consumption. The chip includes an upgraded Neural Engine designed to accelerate AI algorithms directly on the device.

These on‑device AI capabilities support features such as real‑time language assistance, smart document summarisation, improved photo and video enhancements, and personalised study tools. Because processing happens locally, Apple emphasises enhanced privacy and reduced reliance on the cloud, an important consideration for younger users and educational institutions.

Target audience and market impact

By introducing the MacBook Neo at a $599‑class price point, Apple is clearly targeting students, families and budget‑conscious buyers who might otherwise opt for low‑cost Windows laptops or Chromebooks. The combination of Apple silicon, long battery life and integrated AI features is intended to differentiate the Neo in a crowded entry‑level notebook segment.

Analysts expect the device to strengthen Apple’s presence in the education market and broaden the entry ramp into the wider Mac lineup. For first‑time users, the Neo serves as an affordable way to experience macOS, with enough performance headroom for everyday productivity, creative work and AI‑enhanced workflows.
