The American Film Institute unveils its honorees for 2025, recognizing standout series like Severance and Pluribus as the year’s defining cultural milestones.
The American Film Institute (AFI) has officially announced its selections for the best television programs of 2025, curating a list that balances long-awaited returning favorites with groundbreaking new narratives. Considered one of the most prestigious honors in the entertainment industry, the AFI Awards do not rank their selections but rather present a collective acknowledgement of the year’s most culturally and artistically significant works. This year’s honorees reflect a dominance of premium cable and streaming platforms, with HBO, Netflix, and Apple TV+ securing multiple spots.
The 2025 list is heavily populated by high-concept genre storytelling. Apple TV+‘s psychological thriller Severance makes a triumphant return to the list following its acclaimed second season, which critics praised for expanding its surreal corporate mythology. Joining it is the Disney+ series Andor, which concluded its run with a final season that cemented its legacy as a mature, politically complex entry in the Star Wars universe.
Perhaps the most discussed entry is Pluribus, the HBO and A24 co-production that has captivated global audiences with its chilling depiction of algorithmic governance. Its inclusion signals the AFI‘s recognition of the show’s immediate impact on the cultural zeitgeist.
The jury also highlighted excellence in historical and crime storytelling. Death by Lightning, the Netflix drama recounting the assassination of President James A. Garfield, was honored for its meticulous production design and powerful performances. Similarly, Task, the new HBO limited series from the creative team behind Mare of Easttown, secured a spot, praised for its gritty realism and exploration of law enforcement task forces.
The list demonstrates a renewed appreciation for workplace dynamics, both dramatic and comedic. The Diplomat (Netflix) returns to the honoree circle, continuing its sharp examination of international politics. The Studio, a new industry satire from Apple TV+, was recognized for its meta-commentary on the chaotic world of Hollywood film production.
Rounding out the list are The Pitt, a modern medical drama set in Pittsburgh that has revitalized the genre on the streaming service Max, and The Lowdown, a dark comedy that has garnered a cult following for its biting wit. Finally, Adolescence, a daring new coming-of-age drama, was acknowledged for its innovative one-shot filming technique and emotional depth.
The creative ensembles and production teams behind these ten series will be honored at the annual AFI Awards luncheon, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles on January 9, 2026. This event is unique in the awards calendar as it focuses on community and collaboration, foregoing acceptance speeches in favor of a shared celebration of the art form.
It’s great to see shows like Severance and Pluribus getting recognition—both really push the boundaries of storytelling. The focus on sci-fi and dystopian themes feels spot on for where TV is headed right now, blending entertainment with deeper social commentary. Looking forward to diving into some of the other honored series!
