Fibionic Raises €3M to Advance Bio-Inspired DeepTech Materials

Austrian deeptech startup Fibionic has secured a €3 million funding round to accelerate the development and commercialization of its dragonfly-inspired lightweight materials. The company is positioning its technology as a breakthrough solution for industries where weight, strength and efficiency are critical, including aerospace, mobility and high-performance engineering.

Dragonfly-Inspired Design Meets Advanced Engineering

Fibionic draws inspiration from the micro-architecture of dragonfly wings, which combine extreme lightness with remarkable stiffness and durability. By translating this natural design into engineered structures, the startup develops advanced lightweight composites and metamaterials that promise superior performance compared with conventional alloys and fiber-reinforced plastics.

The company’s proprietary approach integrates computational design, additive manufacturing and advanced materials science. This allows engineers to fine‑tune internal geometries at the micro and meso scale, optimizing for strength‑to‑weight ratio, vibration behavior and energy absorption without adding mass.

Funding to Drive Industrialization and Market Entry

The fresh €3 million will be used to scale production capabilities, expand the engineering team and deepen collaborations with early industrial partners. Fibionic plans to move from pilot-scale projects to certified components for demanding sectors such as aviation, urban air mobility, automotive and robotics.

Key priorities include validating long-term fatigue resistance, ensuring compliance with stringent certification standards and integrating the materials into existing manufacturing workflows. The company is also exploring applications in sports equipment and high-end consumer products, where performance and design differentiation can justify premium pricing.

Positioning Austria as a DeepTech Materials Hub

The investment underscores growing European interest in deeptech solutions that bridge biomimicry and advanced manufacturing. By anchoring its R&D and production in Austria, Fibionic contributes to the region’s ambition to become a hub for next‑generation materials innovation that can reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency and enable lighter, more sustainable vehicles and aircraft.
