Foodforecast secures €8M to fight ultra-fresh food waste

Foodforecast lands fresh capital to curb waste

German AI FoodTech startup Foodforecast has raised €8 million in fresh funding to tackle the persistent problem of ultra-fresh food waste in retail and food service. The company develops data-driven tools that help supermarkets, bakeries and convenience stores better predict demand for short-shelf-life products, from fresh bread to ready-to-eat meals.

Using AI algorithms to predict demand

Foodforecast relies on advanced AI algorithms and machine learning models to forecast how many units of each ultra-fresh item should be produced or ordered each day. By ingesting data such as historical sales, weather conditions, local events, holidays and promotions, the platform generates highly granular demand predictions at store and product level.

This enables retailers and food producers to optimize production runs, reduce overstocking and avoid last-minute markdowns. According to the startup, customers using its technology can cut food waste by double-digit percentages while protecting margins and availability on the shelf.

Addressing the ultra-fresh challenge

Ultra-fresh categories are notoriously difficult to manage because products often have a shelf life of just hours or a few days. Traditional planning tools tend to overestimate demand, leading to unsold goods that must be discarded. Foodforecast aims to close this gap with continuously learning models that adapt to real-time sales patterns.

The new €8 million injection will be used to scale the company’s engineering and data science teams, expand its presence across Europe and deepen integrations with point-of-sale and supply chain systems. The startup also plans to develop additional analytics features to help retailers measure their environmental impact and report on CO₂ savings from reduced waste.

Sustainability and profitability aligned

As regulators and consumers put more pressure on the food industry to act on sustainability, solutions that cut waste without sacrificing availability are gaining traction. By aligning environmental goals with operational efficiency, Foodforecast positions itself as a key technology partner for grocers, bakeries and food manufacturers seeking to modernize their planning processes and reduce the climate footprint of ultra-fresh food.
