Jan Oberhauser on building n8n and the future of automation

Jan Oberhauser shares the n8n journey on podcast spotlight

In a recent podcast interview, Jan Oberhauser, Founder and CEO of n8n, outlined how his company is redefining modern workflow automation and the fast-growing low-code ecosystem. The conversation offers a detailed look at how an open, developer-centric platform can compete with established automation tools while building a global user community.

From side project to global automation platform

n8n started as a personal side project when Jan Oberhauser became frustrated with rigid, closed automation tools that locked users into specific vendors. His vision was to create a flexible, open-source workflow engine that developers and technical teams could self-host, extend and integrate with virtually any service.

During the interview, Oberhauser explains how early traction from the open-source community validated the product and helped shape the roadmap. Contributions from external developers, combined with rapid iteration by the core team, allowed n8n to expand its library of integrations and address real-world automation challenges across startups, agencies and enterprises.

Open source, monetization and product strategy

A key part of the discussion focuses on the balance between open-source licensing and a sustainable business model. Jan Oberhauser describes how n8n uses an open core approach: the core engine remains open, while advanced collaboration, security and management features are offered through commercial plans and cloud hosting.

This strategy, he notes, keeps developers in control of their data and infrastructure, while enabling larger teams to adopt automation at scale with enterprise-grade features and support.

The future of low-code and workflow automation

Looking ahead, Oberhauser highlights the convergence of low-code platforms, API integrations and AI-driven automation. He argues that the next wave of tools will empower non-specialists to design complex workflows, while still giving engineers the depth and extensibility they require.

According to Jan Oberhauser, the long-term mission of n8n is to make advanced process automation accessible to teams of every size, reducing repetitive work and enabling companies to focus on innovation rather than manual operations.
