Laboratory technician examining seaweed-based cattle feed additive to reduce methane emissions from cows

Volta Greentech raises €1.7M to cut cow methane emissions

Volta Greentech secures fresh capital for climate-tech push

Gothenburg-based climate startup Volta Greentech has raised €1.7 million to accelerate its mission to cut methane emissions from cattle, one of the most potent and under-addressed drivers of global warming. The new funding will help the company scale production of its seaweed-based feed additive and deepen collaborations with farmers and food producers across Europe.

Tackling livestock methane with seaweed innovation

Volta Greentech develops a specialized feed additive derived from red seaweed, designed to significantly reduce the methane produced during cows’ digestion. Methane is a greenhouse gas with a far higher warming impact than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, and livestock are responsible for a substantial share of global agricultural emissions.

By incorporating the additive into standard cattle feed, the startup aims to enable farmers to lower their herds’ climate footprint without compromising productivity or animal welfare. Early trials from the broader scientific community suggest that certain seaweed species can reduce methane emissions from cows by up to 80% when used under controlled conditions.

Scaling climate impact across the dairy and beef value chain

The €1.7 million round will be used to expand Volta Greentech’s production capacity, refine its supply chain for sustainable seaweed cultivation, and support new pilot projects with leading dairy and beef brands. The company is positioning its solution as a practical tool for food producers seeking to meet increasingly strict climate targets and respond to consumer demand for lower-emission products.

With regulators, investors and retailers all tightening expectations on agri-food emissions, technologies that directly address enteric fermentation in cattle are gaining momentum. By focusing on a scalable, science-based product that can be integrated into existing farm operations, Volta Greentech aims to become a key player in the emerging field of climate-smart livestock production.
