Tropic secures €91.3M to scale gene‑edited tropical crops

Tropic closes oversubscribed €91.3 million AgTech round

Norwich-based AgTech startup Tropic, a specialist in gene‑edited tropical crops, has announced the close of an oversubscribed €91.3 million (approximately $105 million) funding round. The fresh capital will enable the company to accelerate the development and commercialisation of its next‑generation crop varieties designed to improve yields, resilience and sustainability in tropical agriculture.

Advancing gene‑edited tropical crops

Tropic focuses on applying advanced gene editing technologies to high‑value tropical crops such as bananas, coffee and other staple commodities that are highly vulnerable to climate change, disease and supply chain disruption. By precisely modifying plant genomes, the company aims to create varieties that are more resistant to pests and pathogens, require fewer chemical inputs and deliver more consistent yields for growers.

The startup’s platform leverages cutting‑edge biotechnology and proprietary AI algorithms to identify and target key traits, including disease resistance, improved shelf life and higher nutritional value. This approach is intended to support both large‑scale producers and smallholder farmers in tropical regions, where climate‑driven crop failures pose a growing threat to food security.

Funding to scale R&D and commercial rollout

The oversubscribed €91.3 million raise underscores strong investor confidence in the role of AgTech and gene‑edited crops in transforming global food systems. Tropic plans to use the funding to expand its research and development pipeline, strengthen regulatory and field‑trial programmes, and build partnerships with growers, food companies and regional distributors.

Part of the capital will also support scaling of its Norwich facilities, recruitment of additional scientific and commercial talent, and the advancement of key crops toward market launch in major tropical production regions.

Positioning the UK as a hub for agricultural innovation

The success of Tropic’s latest round highlights the UK’s growing role as a hub for advanced agricultural biotech. As governments and industry seek solutions to rising inflation in food prices and mounting climate pressures, investors are increasingly backing platforms that promise measurable impact on yield, resilience and sustainability.

With this new funding, Tropic is positioned to become a leading player in the global transition toward more climate‑resilient tropical agriculture, aligning commercial opportunity with long‑term environmental and social goals.
