Nominal hits unicorn status with $80M funding round

Austin-based Nominal, a fast-growing provider of AI-powered data tools for hardware engineering teams, has raised $80 million at a $1 billion valuation. The latest round is led by Founders Fund and follows a striking 7x revenue growth over the past 10 months, propelling the company into unicorn territory.

AI infrastructure for complex hardware industries

Nominal builds software that helps engineering teams working on complex physical systems — including aerospace, defence, and robotics — manage and interpret massive volumes of test and operational data. By combining advanced data infrastructure with proprietary AI algorithms, the platform enables engineers to detect anomalies faster, run virtual experiments, and shorten development cycles for high-stakes hardware.

The company’s tools are designed to replace fragmented spreadsheets, custom scripts, and legacy databases with a unified environment for data ingestion, real-time analytics, and collaboration. This is particularly critical in sectors where each test can cost millions of dollars and failures carry significant safety and regulatory implications.

Backed by Founders Fund to accelerate global expansion

The round led by Founders Fund will be used to expand Nominal’s product capabilities and go-to-market reach. The company plans to deepen its presence in core markets such as launch services, defence systems, autonomous vehicles, and industrial robotics, while also targeting adjacent verticals that rely on complex hardware testing.

Scaling engineering and AI capabilities

With fresh capital, Nominal intends to grow its engineering, product, and customer success teams in Austin and other key hubs. Investment will focus on enhancing machine learning models that can automatically correlate sensor data, flag emerging risks, and recommend design improvements before failures occur in the field.

As hardware companies race to bring more capable systems to market, the demand for robust AI-driven data platforms is accelerating. By aligning itself with top-tier investors and demonstrating rapid commercial traction, Nominal is positioning to become a foundational layer in the next generation of aerospace, defence, and robotics innovation.
