SurrealDB expands funding to accelerate AI-focused database growth

London-based SurrealDB has secured an additional €19 million to scale its next-generation multi-model database, aiming to become a core data layer for modern AI applications and real-time services. The fresh capital will be used to grow engineering, enhance enterprise features and expand commercial operations globally.

The startup’s database platform is designed to unify multiple data models — including document, graph and relational — within a single engine. This approach targets developers who currently juggle several specialised databases to support complex AI workloads, data-intensive analytics and low-latency APIs.

Multi-model architecture for AI-era applications

SurrealDB positions its technology as an alternative to stitching together separate NoSQL, graph and SQL systems. By offering a unified query layer and real-time capabilities, the company aims to simplify data architecture for teams building machine learning pipelines, recommendation engines, and conversational AI products.

The platform is built for both cloud-native and on-premise deployments, with a focus on security, horizontal scalability and strong developer ergonomics. Features such as integrated access control, live queries and support for modern programming languages are intended to reduce infrastructure overhead and time-to-market.

Scaling team, product and enterprise reach

The new funding round will enable SurrealDB to invest heavily in its open-source community while expanding paid offerings for enterprise customers. Priorities include advanced observability, enhanced data governance, and integrations with popular AI frameworks and cloud platforms.

As organisations race to operationalise AI models and real-time analytics, the demand for databases that can natively handle diverse data structures is rising quickly. With this latest injection of capital, SurrealDB is positioning itself as a key infrastructure player for companies seeking to modernise their data stack without adding complexity.
