Personio CEO Hanno Renner on Scaling Europe’s HR Tech

Hanno Renner on building a European HR powerhouse

A new episode of the EU-Startups podcast spotlights Personio co-founder and CEO Hanno Renner, who details how the Munich-based company has grown into one of Europe’s most prominent HR software scale-ups. The conversation traces Personio’s journey from a university project to a multi-country platform serving thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises across Europe.

Hanno Renner explains that Personio was created to solve a persistent pain point for SMEs: fragmented and manual people operations. By centralising processes such as recruitment, onboarding, payroll and performance management, Personio aims to free HR teams from admin-heavy tasks so they can focus on strategy and culture.

Digitising HR for Europe’s SMEs

In the interview, Renner outlines how many European companies still rely on spreadsheets and email for core HR processes. He argues that this slows growth, complicates compliance and weakens employee experience. Personio’s cloud-based platform is positioned as a single source of truth for employee data, designed specifically for the regulatory and linguistic complexity of European markets.

The discussion highlights Personio’s emphasis on product localisation, data protection aligned with GDPR, and integrations with existing SaaS tools. According to Renner, these factors have been critical to winning trust in countries with very different labour laws and HR traditions.

Leadership, culture and the future of HR tech

Addressing the challenges of rapid scale, CEO Hanno Renner shares how Personio has worked to preserve a strong internal culture while expanding headcount and opening new offices. He stresses the importance of transparent communication, clear ownership and rigorous hiring standards in fast-growing technology companies.

Looking ahead, the podcast touches on the role of automation and emerging AI algorithms in HR. Renner expects smarter workflows and data-driven insights to help managers make better decisions on hiring, retention and development, while insisting that technology should augment, not replace, human judgment in people management.

The episode offers founders, HR leaders and investors a detailed look at how a European scale-up is redefining HR tech for the SME segment and competing on a global stage.
