Venture capital partners reviewing funding opportunities for UK regional startups beyond London in a modern office setting

Ascension backs UK startups beyond London with £10M push

Ascension wins £10M mandate to back UK regions

UK early-stage investor Ascension has secured a £10 million cornerstone commitment aimed at funding startups across the UK’s regions, signalling renewed momentum for venture investment outside London. The fresh capital is earmarked for founders building high‑growth, scalable businesses beyond the capital’s mature tech ecosystem.

The commitment is designed to catalyse further private and institutional money into underserved hubs such as the North of England, the Midlands, Scotland and Wales. By anchoring a new fund with a sizeable ticket, Ascension is positioning itself as a key player in the government‑encouraged drive to level up access to venture capital.

Focus on early-stage tech and impact-led founders

The new funding will primarily target pre‑seed and seed‑stage rounds, where founders outside London often face the widest equity gap. Priority sectors are expected to include deep tech, climate and clean tech, fintech, and digital health, areas where regional universities and innovation clusters already produce strong technical talent but struggle to attract sufficient capital.

Ascension has built its brand around backing mission‑driven and impact‑oriented companies. The firm is expected to apply the same lens to this regional mandate, seeking startups that combine commercial scalability with measurable social or environmental outcomes. Alongside capital, portfolio companies are set to receive operational support, access to a nationwide mentor network and introductions to follow‑on investors.

Boost for UK innovation beyond the capital

Industry observers view the £10 million commitment as a meaningful signal for the broader UK startup ecosystem. While London remains Europe’s largest venture capital hub, policymakers and investors have long argued that sustainable national growth depends on stronger funding pipelines for regional founders.

By channelling new money into high‑potential companies outside the capital, Ascension aims to help create skilled jobs, commercialise university research and diversify the geography of UK tech success stories. If the strategy proves effective, the cornerstone commitment could unlock additional capital and encourage more investors to look beyond London for their next breakout startup.
