Engineers inspecting low-carbon concrete blocks produced with Carbonaide carbonization technology in a Finnish industrial facility

Carbonaide Secures €3.7M to Turn Concrete into a Carbon Sink

Carbonaide raises fresh capital to decarbonise construction

Finnish climate-tech startup Carbonaide has secured €3.7 million in new funding to scale its technology that turns conventional building materials into a powerful carbon sink. The company aims to help the global construction sector shift from being a major source of CO₂ emissions to a net absorber of carbon.

The round combines equity and supporting financial instruments. It was led by existing shareholders Vantaan Energia, Redstone and Ihantola Invest, with additional backing from private investors including Zero Carbon Future Group, Helkama Kiinteistöt and Ikorni Invest.

Scaling concrete carbonization technology

Carbonaide has developed an industrial process that mineralises captured CO₂ into precast concrete and other building elements, effectively locking carbon into materials for decades. By integrating this technology into existing production lines, the company says concrete factories can be transformed into localised carbon capture and storage hubs.

According to CEO Tapio Vehmas, the fresh capital will be used to scale up commercial operations, expand the company’s CO₂ partner network and accelerate deployment at concrete plants. “With this momentum, we are well-positioned to scale our technology, expand our CO₂ partner network, and continue turning concrete factories into carbon sinks. There is clear demand in the construction industry for solutions that reduce emissions, showing that the industry is turning towards a low-carbon built environment,” he said.

From research spin-out to climate-tech player

Carbonaide is a spin-out from the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, one of Europe’s leading applied research institutions. Building on years of research into carbon utilization and advanced building materials, the startup is targeting one of the hardest-to-abate sectors of the economy.

The construction industry is responsible for a significant share of global greenhouse gas emissions, largely driven by the production of cement and concrete. By embedding captured carbon directly into products, solutions like Carbonaide’s carbon-curing technology promise both reduced embodied emissions and the creation of long-lived carbon stores in the built environment.

The new funding positions Carbonaide to pursue partnerships with concrete manufacturers, energy utilities and carbon capture providers across Europe, as demand grows for scalable, verifiable climate solutions in the construction value chain.
